United States sees a monthly rise of 4% in primary aluminium production in May 2020, daily average output remains flat

Aug 4(LTIT) –The latest report from the United States Geological Survey shows the primary aluminium output in the US in May 2020 stood at 96,000 tonnes, up 4,000 tonnes or 4.35 per cent from 92,000 tonnes in April. On a year-on-year comparison, the production in the US in May stood higher by 2,000 tonnes or 2.13 per cent.

The average daily production in May 2020 was 3,090 tonnes, essentially unchanged from that in April 2020 but slightly more than that in May 2019. In April 2020, the average daily primary aluminium production in the US was 3,060 tonnes and in May 2019 was 3,040 tonnes. However, in comparison with May 2018, the daily production in May this year was 31 per cent higher.

 

Total aluminium recovered from scrap in May 2020 was 231,000 t, 6 per cent less than the amount in April 2020, 19 per cent less than in May 2019, and 25% less than that in May 2018. Of this, 122,000 t of aluminium was recovered from new scrap and 109,000 t was recovered from old scrap.

 

In May 2020, the average US spot market price of primary aluminium ingot was $0.75 per pound, slightly less than that in April 2020, 25% less than that in May 2019, and 41% less than that in May 2018.

 

Inventories of primary aluminium in LME-approved warehouses, including off-warrant inventories, in the United States increased to 132,870 tonnes at the end of May from 98,304 tonnes at the end of April.
